Why Verification Comes First

Almost every interstate license application requires the receiving state to confirm your license is real, active, and free of disciplinary action. This step, called license verification, is usually the single biggest source of delay in the entire transfer process.

Step 1: Identify the Verification Method Your Profession Uses

Some professions verify through a national registry — nursing uses Nursys, the official verification database operated by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN); most skilled trades require a direct request to the issuing state's licensing board, often through an online portal or a signed paper form.

Step 2: Request Early

Request verification before you submit your full application to the new state, since processing can take one to three weeks on its own, independent of the receiving state's own review time.

Step 3: Track the Delivery Method

Many boards send verification directly to the receiving state rather than to you. Confirm whether you need to provide the receiving state's mailing address or portal ID as part of the request.

Step 4: Follow Up Before Assuming It's Lost

If you haven't seen confirmation within the state's stated processing window, follow up directly — verification requests are one of the most common points where paperwork silently stalls.
