Utah Electrician License Reciprocity
By License Tier — Journeyman and Master are genuinely different
Last researched September 4, 2026
Utah treats these two license tiers differently — read each section below carefully.
The reciprocity rules for Journeyman and Master electricians are separately sourced and may cover different qualifying states. See each section below for the full, separately-sourced details.
Journeyman Electrician
Reciprocity Available
Reciprocity RulesUtah has exactly one formal, no-examination bilateral reciprocal agreement for journeyman electricians: with Oregon (Utah DOPL / Oregon Building Codes Division Agreement BCD# 73-0-452). Under this agreement, Utah issues a Journeyman Electrician license WITHOUT EXAMINATION to a holder of an Oregon journeyman electrician license/certificate (and Oregon reciprocates for Utah journeyman holders), provided: the original license was obtained BY EXAMINATION with a minimum score of 75%; it is current, active, and in good standing; and it was earned via at least 4 years (8,000 hours) of electrical trade experience under direct supervision of a licensed journeyman, plus completion of a 4-year electrical apprenticeship vocational education program (minimum 576 classroom hours) — or experience/education independently determined equivalent by the licensing state. All reciprocity applicants must still pay the required fees to the reviewing state. No other state-specific no-exam reciprocal agreement was found for Utah journeyman licensure; for every other state, applicants use Utah's broader ENDORSEMENT pathway instead (see endorsementRules), which does not guarantee an examination waiver.

Source: Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) & Oregon Building Codes Division ↗Exam RequirementVia the Oregon RECIPROCITY pathway: no additional Utah examination — the agreement issues the license 'without examination' provided the original Oregon exam score was at least 75%. Via the general ENDORSEMENT pathway (all other states): Utah Admin. Code R156-1-302 gives the Division discretion to require the applicant pass one or more exams, so a waiver is not guaranteed for journeyman endorsement applicants. Whether journeyman endorsement specifically always requires a Utah-specific exam (as master endorsement explicitly does — see utah-master.json) was not independently confirmed; not assumed to be identical to master's confirmed requirement without direct source text from the Journeyman Out-of-State by Endorsement page, which returned HTTP 403 on every automated fetch.

Master Electrician
Reciprocity Available
Reciprocity RulesUtah has exactly one formal, no-examination bilateral reciprocal agreement for master-level electricians: with Oregon (Agreement BCD# 73-0-452). Under it, Utah issues a Master Electrician certificate WITHOUT EXAMINATION to a holder of an Oregon General Supervising Electrician license (and Oregon reciprocates for Utah Master Electrician certificate holders, issuing a General Supervising Electrician license), provided: the original license/certificate was obtained BY EXAMINATION with a minimum score of 75%; it is current, active, and in good standing; and the holder worked as a licensed journeyman electrician for at least 4 years (8,000 hours) — or equivalent experience as determined by the licensing state. No other state-specific no-exam reciprocal agreement was found for Utah master licensure; for every other state, applicants use Utah's broader ENDORSEMENT pathway instead, which does NOT waive Utah's own exam (see endorsementRules and requiredExams).

Via the general ENDORSEMENT pathway (all other states): DOPL's own Master Electrician Out-of-State Applicants Applying by Endorsement page states explicitly, 'All applicants will be required to pass the Utah Master Electrician Law and Rule examination' — a real, confirmed exam requirement, not merely discretionary language. This is a genuine, directly-quoted distinction from Oregon's true no-exam reciprocity.
