Electrician License

Electrician licensing is regulated at the state or, in some states, the county/city level, which makes interstate transfers unusually fragmented. Most states recognize the NASCLA and IAEI-backed National Electrical Code exam content, but classification levels (apprentice, journeyman, master, contractor) do not map 1:1 across state lines, and business/law exams are almost always state-specific.

Electrician License FAQs

Can I use my electrician license in another state?+

In most cases you cannot simply use an out-of-state license as-is. You typically need to apply for licensure by reciprocity or endorsement in the new state, which may waive the trade exam but almost always requires a state-specific business and law exam.

Is there a national electrician license?+

No. There is no national electrician license or compact. The National Electrical Code (NEC) is a common technical standard, but each state licenses and regulates electricians independently.

Do I need to retake the trade exam if I move states?+

It depends on the pathway. States that accept the NASCLA exam or have a direct reciprocity agreement with your home state often waive the trade exam. States without an agreement usually require the full exam.
